Frequently Asked Questions
Under the International Residential Code (IRC), the maximum riser height for residential stairs is 7.75 inches (19.7 cm), while the minimum riser height is 4 inches (10.2 cm).
The IRC specifies a minimum tread depth of 10 inches (25.4 cm) to provide enough surface for a safe footing when descending stairs.
Blondel's Rule states that two riser heights plus one tread depth ($2R + T$) should ideally equal between 24 and 25 inches (or 60 to 64 cm in metric). If the sum is outside this range, the staircase will feel awkward, shallow, or too steep to walk on.
The final step at the top of the stairs lands directly onto the upper floor level, acting as the tread. Therefore, a stair stringer layout always has one less physical tread board than the total number of vertical rises.
The ideal incline angle for comfortable residential stairs is between 30° and 38°. Angles steeper than 38° make climbing difficult, and angles flatter than 30° require too much horizontal floor space.
