Drywall Sheet Calculator

A professional drywall and framing estimator. Input your layout wall length, height, preferred sheet sizing (4x8, 4x10, 4x12), and waste factors to resolve sheets, screws count, and joint compound mud volumes.

Drywalling (or sheetrocking) is the core step in building rooms. Accurately estimating drywall sheets, screw boxes, and joint compound prevents material runs and cuts down on seams. This calculator helps you size materials for standard 8ft, 10ft, or 12ft walls.

Detailed Project Guide & Calculation Methodology

Calculation Formulas & Methodology

Drywall Sheets Count

Sheets = ⌈(Wall Area × (1 + Waste Factor)) / Sheet Area⌉

Divides total waste-adjusted wall area by sheet size. 4x8 sheets are 32 sq ft, 4x10 sheets are 40 sq ft, and 4x12 sheets are 48 sq ft.

Drywall Screws

Screws = Sheets × 35

Screws are spaced 12 inches apart on vertical studs, averaging roughly 35 screws per standard panel.

Joint Compound Mud

Compound = Wall Area × 0.05

Joint compound ready-mix is estimated at 0.05 gallons per square foot of wall surface.

How It Works

  1. 1Enter the total linear wall length (adding up all walls to be sheeted).
  2. 2Enter the wall height (typically 8 feet for standard rooms).
  3. 3Select your panel dimensions (4x8, 4x10, or 4x12).
  4. 4Adjust the waste slider (10% is standard; use 15% if cutting around many windows/doors).
  5. 5The system displays sheet counts, joint compound, and screw boxes instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pro Tips

  • Order 10% extra sheets to account for cut mistakes and layout corners.
  • Hang sheets horizontally instead of vertically to reduce seams in standard 8ft ceilings.
  • Use fiberglass mesh tape for joints if you want easier compound applications.

Common Mistakes

  • Using standard drywall in damp shower layouts instead of cement backer boards.
  • Over-driving screws, which breaks the face paper and ruins the holding strength.
