Topsoil Calculator

Determine the volume of loam, compost, or potting mix needed for garden beds, lawn leveling, or landscaping. Supports weight in tons and suggests delivery sizes.

Preparing a new lawn, raised garden bed, or leveling your yard? Our Topsoil Calculator helps you determine the precise amount of dirt, loam, or organic compost required. Estimate total volume in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters, along with weight in tons, pounds, and kilograms, plus convenient delivery quantity recommendations.

Detailed Project Guide & Calculation Methodology

Calculation Formulas & Methodology

Volume Formula

Volume = Length × Width × Depth

Calculates raw three-dimensional volume of soil required.

Cubic Yards of Soil

Cubic Yards = (Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Depth (in) / 12)) / 27

Converts depth to feet, determines cubic feet of soil space, and divides by 27 to yield yards.

Topsoil Weight conversion

Tons = Cubic Yards × 1.25

Applies the average dry bulk density of clean topsoil (1.25 short tons/yd³ or 92.6 lbs/cu ft).

How It Works

  1. 1Choose your input units and output unit system.
  2. 2Enter the length and width of the area to be filled.
  3. 3Input the required depth (e.g., 2 inches for top-dressing, 6 inches for turf beds, 12 inches for deep roots).
  4. 4Adjust the waste slider (10% accounts for settling and uneven subgrade).
  5. 5Click Calculate to review your soil volume, weight, and delivery options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pro Tips

  • Topsoil settled height will be about 10-15% less than the freshly poured height. Order 10% extra and pack it lightly.
  • For vegetable gardens, mix topsoil with 30-50% organic compost to enrich nutrients and promote healthy crop growth.
  • If your calculations show more than 1 cubic yard is required, order bulk delivery from a local nursery; it's a fraction of the cost of bags.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting soil settling: Loose soil compacts after watering and rain. If you don't add 10-20% extra, your beds will sit too low.
  • Using topsoil for pots: Topsoil is too heavy and compacts too tightly for containers. Use potting mix instead.
  • Poor weeding: Leaving weeds or sod in place before laying new topsoil can cause them to grow right back through the new soil.
