How to Measure a Roof: Pitch, Squares & Material Estimates

By HomeProject.tools Roofing TeamPublished 2026-06-07

Accurate roof measurement is the foundation of every successful roofing project. An error of even 5% in your area calculation can translate to multiple missing bundles when the roofing crew reaches the final sections.

Method 1: Measure from the Ground (Safest)

  • Step 1 — Measure the building footprint including attached garages and overhangs.
  • Step 2 — Calculate total footprint area by breaking into rectangles.
  • Step 3 — Add the overhang (typically 12–18 inches) to each wall dimension.
  • Step 4 — Determine roof pitch using a speed square on an attic rafter.
  • Step 5 — Apply the pitch multiplier from the table below.
Roof PitchPitch MultiplierDegree AngleCommon Use
2:121.0149.5°Low-slope, nearly flat
4:121.05418.4°Gentle residential slope
6:121.11826.6°Standard residential
8:121.20233.7°Steep residential
10:121.30239.8°Very steep
12:121.41445.0°Equal pitch — square pitch

Method 2: Physical On-Roof Measurement

  • Walk each roof plane and record the length and width with a 100-foot tape measure.
  • Calculate each plane's area separately: Length × Width.
  • Add together all plane areas for total pitched surface area.
  • No pitch multiplier needed — you have measured the actual sloped surface.

Converting Area to Squares and Bundles

  • Total Squares = Total Pitched Area (sq ft) ÷ 100
  • Add waste factor: Order Squares = Total Squares × 1.10 (gable) or × 1.15 (hip roof)
  • Bundle count = Order Squares × 3 (standard architectural shingles)
  • Underlayment: Order enough rolls to cover 100% of the pitched area

⚠️ Safety Reminder: Falls from roofs are one of the leading causes of construction fatalities. Always use a properly rated safety harness anchored to a ridge anchor on pitches above 4:12.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I measure my roof from the ground?

Yes. You can measure the building footprint from the ground with a tape measure or laser distance meter, then apply the correct pitch multiplier to convert it to the actual pitched surface area.

What is roof pitch and how is it measured?

Roof pitch is expressed as a ratio of rise to run. A 6:12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. You can measure pitch with a speed square placed on a rafter.

What is one roofing square?

One roofing square equals exactly 100 square feet of roof surface.

How do I calculate the pitch multiplier?

Formula: Multiplier = √(1 + (rise/12)²). For a 6:12 pitch: √(1 + 0.25) = 1.118. Multiply your footprint area by 1.118 to get the sloped area.

How many bundles of shingles do I need per square?

Standard three-tab and architectural shingles require exactly 3 bundles per roofing square (100 sq ft).
