Flooring Calculator

Calculate the exact number of boards and retail boxes required for your flooring project. Supports hardwood, laminate, engineered wood, and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) with configurable plank dimensions and waste allowance.

Planning a flooring installation is exciting — but running out of planks mid-project is not. Our Flooring Calculator precisely estimates the number of boards and retail boxes needed for hardwood, laminate, engineered wood, and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring. Enter your room dimensions and plank size to get a complete materials estimate in seconds.

1 · Project Specifications

Detailed Project Guide & Calculation Methodology

Calculation Formulas & Methodology

Floor Area

Floor Area = Room Length × Room Width

Calculates the total square footage of the room floor.

Plank Area

Plank Area = Plank Length × Plank Width

Calculates the coverage area of a single flooring plank in square feet.

Boards Required

Boards = ⌈(Floor Area × (1 + Waste / 100)) / Plank Area⌉

Divides the waste-adjusted floor area by the plank area, rounding up to the nearest whole board.

Boxes Required

Boxes = ⌈Gross Area / Coverage per Box⌉

A standard retail box covers approximately 20 sq ft. This formula calculates how many boxes to purchase.

How It Works

  1. 1Enter your room length and width using your preferred unit system (feet, inches, meters, or cm).
  2. 2Enter the plank/board length and width (found on the package label).
  3. 3Choose a waste allowance — 10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal.
  4. 4Click Calculate to see how many individual boards and boxes to purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pro Tips

  • Acclimate flooring planks in the room for 48–72 hours before installation to minimize expansion gaps caused by humidity changes.
  • Leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap around all walls and fixed objects to prevent buckling as the floor expands seasonally.
  • Install planks parallel to the longest wall or the direction of primary light for a natural, elongated look.

Common Mistakes

  • Measuring only one room: If you plan to run the same floor throughout multiple rooms, calculate the total area as one space — this reduces seams and waste.
  • Forgetting transitions: Door thresholds, T-moldings, and stair-nose moldings are sold separately. Budget for them separately.
  • Ignoring subfloor moisture: LVP and hardwood are sensitive to moisture. Test concrete slabs for moisture before installation to prevent buckling.
